A long wait, but I am still planning . . .

Perhaps a bit premature to be thinking of my Halloween costume for this year, but being unemployed I find lots of time, for lots of things. I feel pretty good about wanting to be rainbow bright, but wanted to throw the ideas past you all . . . feel free to leave comments.

Every year, generally for several weeks prior to Halloween, I spend my time planning, designing, and making my own costume. There was that year in college where Missy, Michelle and I spent hours slaving over satin Bar Maid dresses. We all agreed they turned out just as we had hoped, unfortunately that year was a popular one for Moulin Rouge so we had much competition in the bar contests and lost 1st place to a 1/2 naked mermaid. Aren’t they all though.

Then there was the following year, the year that Romy & Michelle was our favorite movie and we decided to go as the female duo. My VHS got a good workout that year as we watched for all the details to effectively duplicate the two. Michelle being Michele Weinberger of course, and me being my favorite character, Romy White. This year we killed the competitors, winning in a campus contest as well as 1st place in the bar contest we attended. The best things about being the female duo, one, the cute little dresses, two, the rad dance moves, and three, the sweet valley girl accents we picked up for the night. Did I mention we bleached our hair for the occasion as well. Serious business this time, there would be no loosing to a mermaid again!

Halloween for me just kept getting more interesting . . . the following year, I found a faux fur coat that was bright pink (at Frederick’s of Hollywood, I might add) and designed a whole Ski Bunny get up around it. Highly entertaining. I won no awards at the house party I attended, but did receive a handful of compliments and wonderment at the fact that I had made faux boots. (In fact just boot covers, but no one knew that I had made just covers and not the whole boot.) Good costume year once again, with much time spent in design and planning. First year though that my mother wasn’t enlisted to assist with sewing.

Years to come got a bit simpler. I re-found my collection of 80’s attire (left over from college), ratted my hair to knew heights, pulled up the leg warmers and layered up in off the shoulder sweatshirts, and bangles. The following year I made a crown, jewelry and a sash reading ‘Princess Barbie’ and wore the biggest, ruffleiest, white dress I could find. All Barbie requires is large plastic looking jewelry, big blond hair (achieved thanks to spray in yellow hair color), a fake personality and if your feeling really ‘Barbie’ maybe even arms that are constantly bent at a 90 degree angle. Done.

This year I don’t know if I will pull out the sewing machine and build my own or just grab something on the shelf, but I have many ideas . . . Just 7 more months and you can see for yourself what choice I make. ;)
